The first rite question: When did you decide you’d become a writer?
I don’t know that I realized it, or it was a conscious decision, but when I was four and started trying to write comic books, I had probably unconsciously made the decision. I was nine when I began to understand people could do this and some made a living at it, and by eleven I was dedicated to the idea.
Your literary production is vast, is there one or more of one of your novels that have remained in your heart? That you’ve struggled to let go before you prepare to write the next?
I am always ready to move on to the next. I enjoy writing them all, and I enjoy having written them. Some stay with me longer, and I guess the one that was in my mind and heart the longest before I wrote it, was PARADISE SKY.
Is there a particular place that inspires you, where you usually love to write? And there are hours of the day when you prefer to do it?
I like to write shortly after I get up, check the email and have coffee. I write then. I usually write somewhere within three hours in the morning to less. Now and again I will write in the afternoon or night as well, but rarely. I prefer to write at home in my study, but I’ve written while traveling on my laptop, and sometimes the times vary then, according to activities. It’s rare I don’t get it done. I write daily most of the time, and now and again I’ll take a few days off. But not often. I’m the same way about reading. I rarely read all day long, but I read daily, and usually have read three books by the end of the week, though lately a little less. I watch movies, TV shows, and teach private martial arts lesso
Your production varies greatly between novels, horror, noir and science fiction. But is there a genre you prefer? ns once a week.
The one I’m writing at the moment.
Reading Paradise Sky I noticed that there is a basic historical research. How much time have you spent researching before writing this novel?
I didn’t set out to research. I read the things that interested me, fiction and non-fiction, and it built up over time so when I settled down to write, most of it was there if I needed it. I did do a few specific research things, and I think I missed a step here and there, but on the whole I write out of research I just love to read.
Would you like to introduce us to your latest book? Or give us some anticipation on the next exit?
The next one here is a new HAP AND LEONARD NOVEL, THE ELEPHANT OF SURPRISE. It’s more of a chase thriller than any of the other books. A lot of fun I think, a few new revelations, and its sets the next book up for more revelations.
Now a few questions about you as a reader. At what age have you been passionate about reading and what was the novel that started you in the world of reading?
Comics at four. That led to all the other reading. I’ve always loved reading and writing.
Want to talk about your activity as a screenwriter for movies? Must be exciting?
It’s not that exciting really. It’s fun, and it’s exciting in the sense of creation, but writing novels and stories is far more satisfying. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like it, or comics, or essays. I like it all. But film can be very unsatisfying. Too many factors.
What are your favorite pastimes? We read that you are passionate about martial arts. What do they leave you?
I love martial arts. As I’ve gotten older, and have some ripped muscles and banged bones, I have to find different ways to approach it, but I love the discipline and confidence it’s given me.
Tell us about your favorite dish, talking about cooking and food.
I don’t know that I actually have a favorite dish. I like a lot of things. I don’t eat it often, but I love steak. Florence has wonderful steaks.

Buongiorno Joe, sei un autore molto seguito qui in Italia. Grazie per aver accettato di rilasciare al blog “Septem Literary” questa intervista.
La prima domanda di rito: quando hai deciso che saresti diventato uno scrittore?
Non so quando l’ho capito, o se è stata una decisione consapevole, ma quando avevo quattro anni e ho iniziato a cercare di scrivere fumetti, ho avuto probabilmente inconsciamente preso la decisione. Avevo nove anni quando ho cominciato a capire che poteva essere una scelta di vita e che alcuni l’avevano intrapresa come strada a undici mi ci sono dedicato e ho iniziato a scrivere.
La tua produzione letteraria è vastissima, c’è uno o più di uno dei tuoi romanzi che ti sono rimasti nel cuore? Che hai faticato a lasciare andare prima di apprestarti a scrivere il successivo?
Sono sempre pronto a passare al prossimo. Mi è piaciuto scriverli tutti, e sono felice di averlo fatto. Alcuni sono rimasti con me più a lungo, e credo che quello che mi è rimasto nella mia mente e nel cuore più lungo è stato Paradise Sky.
C’è un luogo particolare che ti ispira, dove solitamente ami scrivere? e ci sono ore
del giorno in cui prediligi farlo?
Mi piace scrivere poco dopo che mi sono svegliato, controllato la posta elettronica e preso un caffè. Scrivo allora. Solitamente scrivo ovunque e per tre ore al mattino. Scrivo nel pomeriggio e anche di notte ma raramente. Io preferisco scrivere a casa nel mio studio, ma ho scritto durante il viaggio sul mio portatile, e talvolta i tempi variano poi, secondo le attività. Scrivo ogni giorno per la maggior parte del tempo, e ogni tanto mi prendo un paio di giorni di riposo. Ma non spesso. Allo stesso modo la lettura. Raramente leggo tutto il giorno, ma leggo ogni giorno, solitamente leggevo tre libri alla settimana, anche se ultimamente un po’ meno. Io guardo I film, spettacoli televisivi, e insegno arti marziali
La tua produzione varia molto tra romanzi, horror, noir e fantascienza. C’è però un
genere che prediligi?
Quello che sto scrivendo al momento.
Leggendo Paradise Sky ho notato che c’è una ricerca storica di base. Quanto tempo
hai dedicato alla ricerca prima di scrivere questo romanzo?
Non ho fatto propriamente una ricerca. Ho letto diversi testi che mi interessavano, fiction e saggistica. Ho immagazzinato le informazioni così quando ho iniziato a scrivere me ne sono servito. Ho fatto alcune ricerche specifiche, ma nel complesso ciò che scrivo deriva dal mio amore per la lettura.
Vorresti presentarci il tuo ultimo libro? o rilasciarci qualche anticipazione sulla
prossima uscita?
Il prossimo è un nuovo romanzo HAP AND LEONARD NOVEL, THE ELEPHANT OF SURPRISE. È più di un thriller chase rispetto agli altri libri. Un sacco di divertimento credo, un paio di nuove rivelazioni, aspettiamo l’uscita per ulteriori rivelazioni.
Ora qualche domanda su di te come lettore. A che età ti sei appassionato alla lettura
e qual è stato il romanzo che ti ha iniziato al mondo della lettura?
Ho iniziato con i fumetti poi ho proseguito con le altre letture. Ho sempre amato leggere e scrivere.
Vuoi parlarci della tua attività di sceneggiatore per i film? Deve essere
entusiasmante?
Non è poi così eccitante. È divertente, ed è eccitante nel senso della creazione, ma scrivere romanzi e storie è molto più soddisfacente. Ma questo non significa che non mi piaccia. Ma il film può essere molto insoddisfacente. Troppi fattori.
Quali sono i tuoi passatempi preferiti? abbiamo letto che sei appassionato di arti
marziali. Cosa ti lasciano?
Adoro le arti marziali. Col tempo può essere traumatico per ossa e muscoli, ma mi piace la disciplina e la fiducia che mi ha dato.
Raccontaci il tuo piatto preferito, parlando di cucina e cibo.
Non so se in realtà ho un piatto preferito. Mi piacciono molte cose. Io non la mangio spesso, ma io amo la bistecca. Firenze ha ottime bistecche.
